BBNJ Richmond, VA HVAC Expert Speaks Out

Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bills

Richmond, VA - June 2010 – BBNJ.org/BradleyHC - While you cannot control the utility cost for your energy bills, there are ways to make an immediate impact by following a few tips.  Brad Bradley, owner of Bradley Mechanical offers his advice.

1.    System Cleaning - 1/25th of an inch of dirt on an indoor or outdoor coil can reduce your efficiency as much as 30% so have your system cleaned and serviced every six months.

2.    Proper refrigerant charge – While it should be addressed at installation, it should also be checked every six months when proper maintenance is performed.  A 5% uncharged system can make a 15 SEER unit a 10 SEER unit.

3.    Proper duct sizing and sealing - The average duct system in the USA is under 60% efficient and has up to a 40% leakage. One square inch of return leakage in an attic on a 90 degree day can reduce your efficiency over 50%.

4.    Replace older units - If your system is 10 years old or older, you can cut your heating and air bills in half by replacing it with one of today’s high efficiency system. We are installing equipment today with SEER ratings as high as 21 SEER.

5.    Have a combustion analysis - Most all gas and oil furnaces are under fired by as much as 30%. A combustion analysis can be performed on your current system to determine its exact efficiency. After setting the proper combustion we see up to 30% increase in efficiency. The air is hotter, runs less, and uses less fuel.

6.    Install a programmable thermostat - When programmed properly, this can save you 5 to 35% on your energy bills.
